SEGUIN – The Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA) is issuing an “advisory” recommending recreationalists not use personal water craft (jet skis) or pull inflatables on the Hydroelectric Lakes during the upcoming Independence Day (Fourth of July) holiday due to and safety concerns.
In 2010, GBRA in cooperation with the hydroelectric lake homeowners associations’ representatives, Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD), Texas A&M University and other entities participated in an extensive lake capacity study. The result of the study, related meetings and surveys, led GBRA’s Board of Directors to adopt relevant lake restrictions at that time. This year, GBRA continues with the advisory only, although issue remains under review and has a potential to become a permanent restriction in the future.
“While GBRA continues to review the issue of high lake capacity during certain holidays, we want to make sure we are doing what we can to make the lakes safe for all users during these high-use periods,” said David Welsch, GBRA’s executive manager for Business Development and Resource Management.
Lake users and residents will see GBRA’s “advisory” signs posted at various locations adjoining lakes Dunlap, McQueeney, Placid, Nolte, Gonzales and Wood beginning this week.
The GBRA was established by the Texas Legislature in 1933 as a water conservation and reclamation district. GBRA provides stewardship for the water resources in its 10-county statutory district, which begins near the headwaters of the Guadalupe and Blanco rivers, ends at San Antonio Bay, and includes Kendall, Comal, Hays, Caldwell, Guadalupe, Gonzales, DeWitt, Victoria, Calhoun, and Refugio counties.
