Update Related to On-Going Repairs at GBRA Hydro-Lakes

SEGUIN—In August 2017, GBRA initiated repair activities on the spillgates to address critical components, which failed at Lake Wood, and were in need of immediate repair at the other dams in the system. Repairs began at Meadow Lake and Lake Placid due to their condition. Once completed, repairs at lakes McQueeney and Gonzales will begin. The dam at Lake Dunlap received substantial repairs in 2012, and is believed to be in good operational condition and is not included in these scheduled repairs.
 
Based on current progress, GBRA anticipates construction will begin at Lake McQueeney no sooner than July 23, 2018.  Construction activities will require the water level in the lake to be lowered 18 to 24 inches for an estimated nine months until repairs on McQueeney Dam have been completed.  Potential navigational hazards on the lake have been previously identified and will be marked.  Buoys will also be deployed indicating restricted water access.  GBRA encourages lake residents to prepare their boats and property for possible impacts prior to the scheduled lowering. A 30-day confirmation notice will be posted late next week affirming the expected start date at Lake McQuenney. 
 
Water levels at Lake Placid and Meadow Lake will continue to remain below normal pool elevation due to ongoing repairs.  Due to additional repairs that will be conducted by contractors and GBRA crews, Lake Placid water levels are not anticipated to return to normal operating levels until early September.  Similar efforts are planned for Nolte Dam, so the water level at Meadow Lake is not anticipated to return to normal levels until November.  
 
GBRA’s contractor anticipates repairs to begin at Lake Gonzales in mid-September, which will require Lake Gonzales to be lowered for an expected six months.  A 30-day advance notice will be given prior to the date in which work is anticipated to commence at Lake Gonzales. 
 
Due to the nature of these repairs, a strict timetable of work expected for each spill gate is not practicable. Contractors are able to work on two dam sites at once, but only one spill gate at each site at a time. This repair sequence is to preserve GBRA’s ability to operate the remaining spill gates to pass elevated flows. Additionally, each lake must be lowered 18-24 inches for the duration of the repair activities. Please note weather conditions and other uncontrollable factors may increase the length of time needed to complete this effort.    
 
GBRA was established by the Texas Legislature in 1933 as a water conservation and reclamation district. GBRA provides stewardship for the water resources in its 10-county statutory district, which begins near the headwaters of the Guadalupe and Blanco rivers, ends at San Antonio Bay, and includes Kendall, Comal, Hays, Caldwell, Guadalupe, Gonzales, DeWitt, Victoria, Calhoun, and Refugio counties. GBRA provides services that include hydroelectric generation; water and wastewater treatment; municipal, industrial, and agricultural raw water supply; and recreational operations.
